Saffron helping take control & proving a healthy school meal offer

North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) has recently adopted Fretwell-Downing Hospitality’s (FDH) Saffron software system to help manage and control a demanding school meal service. NELC selected Saffron because it was a unique proven application specifically developed for the Local Authority Caterers requirements.

NE Lincs - on the South Bank of the Humber estuary - covers an area of over 70 square miles supporting a population of around 156,000 within 70,000 households. It is a close and compact community of urban centres and surrounding villages with the main centres of population being Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham. The Council provides catering across 60 participating schools with approximately 15,000 as potential customers.

As part of a general initiative to improve the service provided, the Council has started to implement the Saffron system to improve management information and budgetary controls within the business. In addition, Saffron will be used to provide nutritional analysis and help promote healthy eating within their schools.

Saffron will be used to collate meal numbers and expenditure across all sites and then provide accurate management information. The Council’s aim is also to ensure that all aspects of food and nutrition in schools promote the health and wellbeing of the pupils. The recent acquisition of the Saffron system will also enable NELC to carryout a nutritional analysis when planning menus. The need to gather this data, evaluate it and take effective action is paramount in today’s pressured environment. Saffron provides the management tool that facilitates this process, quickly and efficiently.
