RECYCLING

Paper manufacture destroys trees and forests, and also consumes water. Bleaching chemicals are used in certain production processes, which also has an adverse effect on the environment. Waste disposal often occurs at landfill sites which can be a potential land pollutant. Methane is produced by organic matter in landfill sites and this filters into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas.

50 reams of paper equates to approximately one standard sized tree.

Within FDH, paper is used throughout for general office functions.

Paper and other office waste material (cardboard, cds, light plastics and metal) is normally sent to landfill.

In its first year of concentrated recycling, FDH has managed to save 21 trees.

ELECTRICITY AND WATER USAGE

Electricity uses natural resources, and creates atmospheric emissions. These emissions could lead to acid rain and global warming.

Within FDH, electricity is used for lighting, computer equipment and office machinery, including some air conditioning units.

We are monitoring our usage of power and water, and trying to conserve and reduce wherever possible.

DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

Waste products are harmful to the environment, e.g; fridges, batteries, fluorescent lighting strips and electrical equipment. They produce toxic gases (CFCs for example) and so must be disposed of responsibly.

FDH ensures that all hazardous waste is disposed of correctly and responsibly.

SUPPLIERS AND SUB-CONTRACTORS

We at FDH, see it as our responsibility to try to select suppliers and sub-contractors with the same, or better, commitment to an environmental policy as ourselves.

OIL STORAGE

Oil is used for general heating purposes. It is stored underground but vigorous checks are in place to ensure that leakage is avoided.

EMISSIONS TO AIR

As a company we are committed to monitoring and reducing the risk of harmful emissions to air. This includes a review policy for company mileage and fire prevention.
